My Story About Lamb Koftas

L is for Lamb Koftas!!! L is for Lamb

Monty and Granny were outside in the garden planting some flowers.

All of a sudden, Monty could smell a delicious smell coming from over the fence. He peeked through a hole and could see his neighbour was cooking a barbecue.

‘Granny’, shouted Monty.

‘I can see burgers on the barbecue’

Granny looked over the fence.

‘Why Yes, Monty…… would you like to have a barbecue today?’

‘Yes please Granny’, said Monty, jumping up and down…VERY excited.

‘Wonderful….And I know the perfect thing to make’

said Granny

What’s that?’ asked Monty

‘We’re going to make my special lamb koftas’ said Granny

‘What’s a Kofta’ asked Monty

‘I’ll show you’ said Granny, with a big smile on her face.

And she walked to the kitchen, to start making her famous Lamb Koftas

Cooking with kids - how to make lamb koftas

by Monty The Monkey,
Lamb is such an awesome meat – there are so many different ways you can eat it, for example roast leg or shoulder of lamb, in a stew or casserole, lamb cutlets or as mince in a shepherd’s pie, moussaka or in burgers or lamb koftas.

Lamb Koftas are delicious pieces of lamb mince, mixed with spices.

This recipe involves some knife work, using heat (the grill/griddle pan or bbq) and other kitchen gadgets so please make sure an adult handles these parts of the recipe! Always be careful in the kitchen but remember to have fun too!

Cooking Time: 15 to 20 minutes

How to make lamb koftas for kids

Method

1. Peel and crush the garlic cloves.

2. Chop the mint leaves.

3. Place the mince in a large bowl and add the garlic, cumin, coriander and one tablespoon of chopped mint leaves. Add the salt and pepper. Mix all the ingredients together until well blended.

4. Divide the mixture into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a chopping board with a cupped hand to turn them into an oval shape.

5. Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. You can use wooden skewers but make sure to soak them in water first so they don’t burn when cooking.

Make sure an adult does this bit.

6.  Make the minty yogurt dip:
i) cut a lemon in half and place it on top of a lemon juicer and press down.  Pour out two teaspoons of juice into a bowl.

Make sure an adult does this bit.

ii) add the yogurt and the chopped mint and mix well together.

7. Cooking: You can either cook under a pre-heated grill (on high) or on a griddle pan or barbecue for 3-4 mins each side. Don’t turn until they are well sealed or the meat will stick to the grill or pan. Season if you want, and set aside.

Make sure an adult does this bit.

8. Serve the koftas with the yogurt and mint dip and some flat breads.

9. Tuck in and enjoy!
